Man, 23, dies after immigration raid
AN investigation is under way into the death of a man who fell from a factory roof after an immigration raid.
An Immigration Enforcement team from Cardiff attended the Shaftesbury car wash in Albany Street, Newport, at around 10am on Saturday as part of an operation referred to them by the Home Office.
Shortly afterwards a 23-yearold Sudanese man fell from an adjacent factory roof.
He was then found on the floor of an annex building next to the factory with critical injuries.
It’s understood that the Immigration Enforcement officers called for an ambulance and performed CPR on the injured man until paramedics arrived at the scene.
“When the ambulance arrived the man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.”
Now the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed that it is looking into the circumstances which led to the 23-year-old’s death.
Investigators from the IOPC have been at the scene.
Witness accounts have been taken from the Immigration Enforcement officers and from the car wash staff who were at the scene, while CCTV from the area is also being recovered.
Jonathan Green, IOPC regional director who has responsibility for Home Office matters, said: “This was a tragic and shocking incident.
“We have a remit to investigate in certain circumstances where a death or serious injury occurs to a member of the public in the course of immigration enforcement staff carrying out their duties.”
