Clydach murderer can not appeal, family told

THE family of the man jailed for the brutal murders of four people in Clydach has been told again his case is unlikely to be sent for appeal.

David Morris was jailed for life in 2006, after being found guilty of the murder of Mandy Power, her two young daughters, Katie and Emily, aged 10 and eight, and her 80-year-old mother, Doris Dawson, at their Swansea Valley home in 1999.

Morris, formerly of Rhyddwen Road in Craigcefnparc, has always maintained his innocence.

Last year the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) gave his family provisional notice that his case wasn’t then considered appropriate for appeal, despite years of lobbying by his family.

And the CCRC has now once again notified the family they are not minded to refer the case to appeal.

Justin Hawkins, head of communications for the CCRC, said: “We have sent a second provisional notice explaining the reason in detail that we are not minded to refer the case to appeal, and have invited them to respond.”

Lawyers acting for Morris now have the opportunity to present any further information they think may influence the decision.

Ms Power, her children and her mother were brutally beaten to death with a pole, before the killer lit a number of fires at their Kelvin Road house in a horrific crime which shocked the nation.

Morris was found guilty of the murders in 2002, but his convictions were then quashed after the Court of Appeal decided he had not had a fair trial due to a conflict of interest on the part of Morris’s legal team.

He was convicted for a second time in 2006, by a jury at Newport Crown Court, with the judge at the time directing that Morris should never be released back into the community.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission, which has the power to refer the case to the Court of Appeal, revealed in December 2014 that it was to review the case.

The family of Morris have indicated on social media that they intend to keep fighting for a review of his case.
