THIS week we bring the good news that music festival Welshfest has finally been given the go-ahead after being refused an events licence earlier this year.

Vale of Glamorgan council in April turned down a licence application for Welshfest, which is expected to attract up to 5,000 people, due to concerns over public safety and noise.

But the event, due to take place at the Coedarhydyglyn Estate in St George’s-superEly between July 27 and 29, has now been given a licence by the council after a follow-up hearing.

The event promises three days of live music with 100 acts across four stages and will feature performances by some of the best acts from Wales including Goldie Lookin’ Chain, Kosheen’s Sian Evans, Kizzy Crawford, Fireroad, The Dirty Youth, The Riff and Buffalo Summer.

Full weekend early bird tickets are £45. Day tickets are £25.

A spokesman for the event said: “The news of the licence being granted has come after much confusion over the requirements of the local authority to allow me to put the festival on.

“I am very happy to say that these objections and concerns about the festival have now been satisfied.

“We have received absolutely no objections from the public, which I think gives promise to the support of the event in general.

“The line-up has been announced for some time now and I am grateful for the artists’ continued support of WelshFest and commitment to perform during a time of uncertainty. It’s going to be a fantastic event and the crew and I can’t wait to get on site and get things ready.”

The USW Music & Sound Vinyl Sampler – Create, is a compilation album showcasing a selection of the school’s artists. The featured tracks have been chosen by a panel of tutors and industry guests who spent a music filled few weeks hotly debating the high standard of entries.

The end result is a fantastic collection of 11 tracks written, performed and engineered by USW students, wrapped in a gatefold cover designed by MA Graphic student Kim Appleby and now available in Spillers Records in Cardiff.

Lucy Squire, Academic Manager for Music & Sound, said: “The Create Sampler Project is a celebration of the talent in the School of Music and Sound. Without doubt some of the featured artists will break through and we are excited to offer this level of exposure at the start of our students’ careers.”

Ashli Todd from Spillers Records added: “Spillers has always been committed to supporting emerging new music; the Create Sampler provides the perfect tool to do just that. We hope it becomes an annual release because the shoots at grassroots is where everything grows from.”
