STANDING STRAW SALE

The 18th annual collective sale of 1,350 acres of standing straw, held by J Straker, Chadwick & Sons at Monmouthshire Livestock Centre, saw a huge crowd of buyers present, resulting in a record-breaking sale.

With barns empty after the difficult winter and the current threat of drought, demand was certainly at maximum levels.

Winter wheat sold to an amazing £223.33 per acre, with 10 lots selling in excess of £140/acre and overall 720 acres levelling at £110/acre.

Winter oats topped at £160 per acre, winter barley at £106 per acre and winter oilseed rape at £85 per acre.

The spring-planted crops were obviously showing the signs of lack of rain, but spring barley still sold to £80 per acre, with spring oats and spring oilseed rape both to £56 per acre.

Auctioneer Lyndon Trumper sold the 83 lots to a complete clearance in just one hour, with an overall average of £92 per acre for all crops sold.
