Protesters against US president’s visit to UK

-

THE US president’s arrival in the UK was met with anti-Trump marches in towns and cities across the country, with Cardiff hosting two protests.

Hundreds of people gathered outside St David’s Centre yesterday evening before marching to The Hayes, with crowds chanting “Donald Trump go away”, while waving banners that included “Trump go home, we shall overcomb” and “Mr Trump I despise you more than seagulls on bin day”.

Later, Women’s Equality Network (WEN) Wales mentees held a vigil on the steps of the Senedd to protest against Donald Trump’s “damaging rhetoric and politics”.

Catherine Fookes, director of WEN Wales, said: “We are really pleased that our mentees have taken the initiative and organised this event to show that Wales is against the casual racism and sexism of Trump.

“It is important to protest against his damaging policies such as separating families that have had such a negative impact on women and children. We are proud to be part of the carnival of resistance that is taking place across the UK.”

Eluned Morgan AM added: “Across Wales people have been telling me that they are concerned about the visit of the American President to the UK.

“This event in Cardiff brought people from all backgrounds to one place, to stand together for equality and fairness.

“We sent a strong, but peaceful message that we disagree with the politics of hate and of division.”

In Swansea, hundreds of protesters lined the streets of Swansea as Donald Trump started his twoday visit to the UK.

The event included speeches from Swansea West MP Geraint Davies, as well as members of the public who expressed their disapproval of Trump’s visit to the UK.

Tim Evans, from Killay, was at the protest.

He said: “I’m protesting the visit of one of the most dangerous presidents I’ve ever seen.

“We want to show Trump that he’s not welcome in Britain. I think that introducing tariffs will be a dangerous move and it will destroy Port Talbot.”
