WALES ace Gareth Bale received a roaring hometown welcome last night as he dropped by his Cardiff sports bar to meet excited fans.

The Real Madrid star stopped by at Elevens to unveil a new piece of memorabilia for the city centre sports bar – the boots he wore during the Champions League final back in May.

The Whitchurch-born footballer received a warm welcome from scores of football fans and supporters who gave him a roaring welcome, with some queuing for hours to secure entry to the exclusive, first come, first served event.

The Wales international then took part in a Q&A session before fans got to meet their football idol in person and get autographs and football shirts signed.

Speaking during the Q&A, the 28-year-old addressed his brilliant performance during Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Champions League final, the Wales camp and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Real Madrid.

On that bicycle kick, Bale said: “It’s just kind of one of those things that you don’t think about, you just react to it.

“I’ve always wanted to score a bicycle kick. To do it on such an occasion was the place to do it.

“I actually haven’t watched it back too many times!

“If you don’t try these things, they never come off.”

And after it was confirmed this week that Ronaldo had signed for Italian giants Juventus – amid speculation over where Bale will play his club football in the upcoming season – the former Whitchurch High School pupil said: “He’s an incredible player, what he’s done in his career, he’s obviously been an incredible player for Madrid. I wish him all the best of luck for the future.”

And with Wales’ attention soon turning to the Nations League clashes against Denmark and the Republic of Ireland later this year, Bale added: “It’s up to us to keep it going.

“We all give 110% whether we win, draw or lose.

“It’s about building now to the future and just to be as competitive as we can.”
