Crash-death jury discharged

THE jury in the trial of a driver who ran over and killed the mother of Olympic cycling champion Chris Boardman has been discharged.

Liam Rosney, 32, is alleged to have ended a phone call to his wife seconds before he drove over Carol Boardman, 75, after she fell from her bicycle on a mini-roundabout in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire, in July 2016.

He and his wife, Victoria Rosney, also 32, were both accused of doing an act tending or intending to pervert the course of justice by deleting logs recording the calls from their phones.

But yesterday, the fourth day of their trial at Mold Crown Court, Judge Rhys Rowlands directed the jurors to return not-guilty verdicts on the perverting the course of justice charges as he said they could not fairly convict either defendant.

He then discharged the jury of seven men and five women from returning verdicts in respect of the other charges in the trial.

Liam Rosney, of Welland Drive, Connah’s Quay, denies causing death by dangerous driving and an alternative count of causing death by careless driving.

He was bailed until December 17, when he will face a further trial on those charges.

Mrs Boardman, whose son won gold at the 1992 Olympics, suffered multiple injuries in the incident, which happened on July 16, 2016.
