ON THE coast of Judaea in 33 CE, Mary of Magdala (Rooney Mara, left) tends the land with her sister Rachel (Ariane Labed) and brothers Daniel (Denis Menochet) and Joseph (Ryan Corr). The patriarchy strongly encourages Mary to marry a local man, whose children need a mother. After much internal wrangling and feverish prayer, Mary defies this edict and brings shame on her kin. Soon afterwards, Mary meets prophet Jesus Christ (Joaquin Phoenix) and he inspires her to join the ranks of the apostles, including Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Judas (Tahar Rahim).

A WRINKLE IN TIME (PG) ★★★

GIFTED student Meg (Storm Reid, left) has shunned friendship since the disappeara­nce of her father Alex (Chris Pine) during his ridiculed experiment­s into space travel. While walking in their neighbourh­ood, Meg and adopted brother Charles (Deric McCabe) encounter three astral seers – Mrs Whatsit (Reese Witherspoo­n), Mrs Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs Which (Oprah Winfrey). The trio reveals that Meg’s father is alive in another dimension and they need the children’s help to find him before an insidious evil pollutes the universe with hatred and self-loathing.

PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING (12) ★★

A DECADE after the Pan Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) unleashed an army of Jaegers – 25-storey tall robots operated by mind-melded humans – to fight giant Kaiju monsters from the deep, former pilot Jake Pentecost (John Boyega, left) is contacted by estranged sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). She implores him to return to the PPDC to head off the threat posed by Liwen Shao (Jing Tian), who intends to replace the Jaegers with unmanned drones. When a new threat emerges from the ocean, Jake and fellow pilot Lambert (Scott Eastwood) sprint into action.
