Bakery staff use their loaf as mum gives birth in car park

-

STAFF at a bakery helped out when a woman gave birth to her baby son in their car park.

Margaret Edwards and her partner, Matt Cooke, were on their way to hospital when baby Tao James Cooke decided to make an early appearance, so they had to park outside the entrance to the Village Bakery in Minera, Wrexham.

The new arrival was delivered by his dad, with a little help from bakery workers Michelle Taylor Jones and Jeanette Owens, writes the Daily Post.

Matt, from Bala, who was also celebrating his birthday that day, said: “My partner went into labour and so we loaded the car and started making our way to Wrexham Maelor hospital.

“But during the journey her contractions were getting stronger and closer together and she told me to stop the car because the baby was coming. I pulled over outside the Village Bakery in Minera and some ladies were outside on their break. I shouted over to them to call an ambulance and they rushed over to help.”

Michelle Taylor Jones, a hygiene operative at Village Bakery, was upstairs with colleague Jeanette Owens when the alarm was raised.

She said: “All I heard were the words ‘ambulance’ and ‘baby’ and because I’m a first-aider, I ran out thinking I was going to have to give CPR to a baby. I got to the car as quickly as I could, and the mum was in the front passenger seat holding a baby.

“Jeanette had got a water bottle and I asked the mum if I could hold him and I checked the airways to make sure his mouth was clear. Matt with baby Tao

“Dad was on the phone to the ambulance and we put it on speaker and dad tied the baby’s cord with a phone charger cable – it was the only thing at hand.”

Mr Cooke, who works as a river guide, teaching people whitewater rafting, said delivering a baby was an experience he’ll never forget. The 38-year-old added: “Everyone was fantastic, I can’t thank them enough for their help.”
