Morgan looks to make his mark on World Cup

-

LUKE Morgan is determined to stamp his mark on this weekend’s Sevens World Cup in San Francisco after missing the 2014 tournament through injury.

The Wales flyer is his country’s all-time leading try scorer in the shorter format of the game with 131 touchdowns and will be a key figure for Gareth Williams’ side in San Francisco.

Morgan will try his hand at 15-a-side rugby at the culmination of the World Cup having been given an opportunity to trial with the Ospreys, but his main focus right now is this weekend’s action at AT&T Park.

“I got injured just before the last World Cup in Russia, so I’m really looking forward to this one,” he said.

“It has been a great journey and I’ve enjoyed every minute of travelling the world. Wales Sevens have given me the go ahead to go with the Ospreys for the first couple of months because their first event isn’t until December.”

Having represented the Ospreys once in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, Morgan is confident he can make his mark in Swansea. And he will be taking inspiration from former Wales Sevens team-mate Sam Cross who won senior international honours within a few months of throwing his lot in with the Ospreys.

“I’m going to go off to the Ospreys, put my foot in the door, and show them what I can do,” said Morgan. “Hopefully it will go well for me, just like it did for Sam. He went off and did well enough to get a Welsh international cap.

“I might not be as good as that, but it is still everybody’s dream to one day play for Wales. I’m excited about the prospect of joining up with the Ospreys again.”
