May should seek vote on a ‘no deal’ Brexit

-

MRS May says that stockpiling is about making sure that we will be able to continue to do the things that are necessary if we leave the EU without a deal.

She says this is “responsible and sensible”. I would put this phrase on a par with her old favourite – “strong and stable”.

Leaving without a deal means that we will have to negotiate trading deals with all countries. This will take years and stockpiles will have run out long before completion of the deals.

The responsible and sensible approach is to ensure that we are not in that position. All of her proposals are rejected by the democratically elected governments of all other member states of the EU – not just Juncker and Barnier – on the grounds that there are glaring omissions and inconsistencies.

Unless she and her team can come up with something better, before she enters a no-deal Brexit she should seek the agreement or otherwise of the electorate by way of another referendum. The view of the electorate would not be gained by a general election as the Labour Party is as divided on this issue as the Tories.

Mrs May and Brexiteers are always saying they are representing the will of the people. However, people’s views change, which is why we have elections at regular intervals – and why we had the Brexit referendum, given that the previous referendum saw two thirds in favour of membership. If Brexiteers are convinced that they still represent the will of the people, even if there is no deal, why are they opposed to another referendum? Alan Rumble Cardiff it’s the girls that actually produce the goods. Now it’s a fact of life that the more respect and lightness of touch a farmer shows the stock – and whatever the PC brigade insist, the term “girls” is a sign of boundless affection – then the better the animals will serve their masters and mistresses.

Indeed, I remember watching one Country Showdown episode involving several milk producers – and one farmer kept referring to his girls as “ladies”. Now that’s what I call natural-born class. Huw Beynon Llandeilo
