Four in court over fatal stabbing of 20-year-old man
FOUR men appeared in court yeterday after a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death in Cardiff.
Last Monday, police were called to reports of a serious assault in the front garden of a house in Corporation Road, Grangetown, just before 2am.
Police said Malaciah Joseph Thomas, from Butetown, had suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene.
Yesterday, the case of Awez Jamshaid, Christopher Griffiths and Daniel Roberts was listed before Judge Eleri Rees for a preliminary hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.
James Wilson, prosecuting, said: “They are charged with murder.”
Awez Jamshaid, 19, from Moore Close, Ely, was represented by Derrick Gooden during the hearing.
Christopher Griffiths, 29, of no fixed address, was represented by Roger Griffiths.
Daniel Roberts, 20, also of no fixed address, was represented by Christopher Rees.
There were around 20 people in the public gallery for the hearing, which lasted around 15 minutes.
The defendants have not yet entered pleas, but a provisional trial date has been set for January 22 next year.
Jamshaid, Griffiths and Roberts were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on September 20.
In Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, a fourth man appeared in court in connection with Mr Thomas’ death.
Saif Shahzad, 19, appeared before magistrates, charged with murder.
During yesterday’s five-minute hearing, Shahzad, of Fidlas Road, Llanishen , spoke only to confirm his address and date of birth.
The teenager, dressed in a grey sweater and jogging bottoms, will appear at Cardiff Crown Court today.
Around 10 members of the public sat in the public gallery to watch the brief hearing.
Chairman Susan Brown said: “This is a matter for the Crown Court. You will appear at Crown Court in the morning and will be remanded in custody.”
On Sunday, a South Wales Police spokesman said Mr Thomas’ family had been updated regarding the developments and continue to be supported by family liaison officers.
