Emu heads for the hills after daring farm escape

-

AN EMU is on the loose in Swansea and has been spotted on several mountains in the area.

The bird has been missing since Saturday after escaping from Coynant Farm in Felindre – and its owners are frantically searching the area.

Hannah Jones, who lives on the family-run farm, has had the emu for two years. This is the first time the ostrichlike bird has escaped.

“I can’t believe that the emu has wandered off, it must have jumped the fence,” she said. “Since it went missing we have been trying to find it.”

But Hannah, 22, added that had proven difficult.

“Emus run fast, so it can be really hard to catch them. We hoped it would find its way back but we think it’s got lost,” she said.

“We have had calls from people saying that it is on a mountain close to our farm but now we have been told that it’s moved to Graig Fawr mountain in Pontarddulais. We are going to make it our mission to find it.”

Mark Phillips, 55, spotted the emu yesterday morning while walking his dog on a mountain above Pontarddulais.

He said: “I was quite surprised when I found the emu... You don’t really expect to find one when you’re walking your dog in the morning. The emu was very large, I’m 5ft 10 and it was the same height as me. It was calm and friendly and looked in good health.”
