Club still tracking Dons ace

SWANSEA City are keeping tabs on Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna as they eye defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

The Swans have been strongly linked with the Scotland international, who won his cap in the same game as Oli McBurnie in March and has already captained his country.

The club had initially distanced themselves from those links, but WalesOnline understands Swansea had scouts at Aberdeen’s Europa League clash with Burnley, and that the player has previously been watched by the Welsh club as they mull over a move.

Aberdeen face the Clarets in the return fixture at Turf Moor on Thursday.

However, McKenna is understood to be among a number of defensive options being weighed up by Swansea and manager Graham Potter.

The 21-year-old only signed a contract extension at Pittodrie in March, with his new terms running through to 2023. The Dons had rejected a bid from Hull City in January and are said to want up to £10million.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes admits he knows McKenna will inevitably move from the Scottish Premiership club at some stage, but believes the player’s interests would be best served by continuing his career with the Dons for the time being.

“I’m not sitting worrying about the phone ringing and losing McKenna. I’m confident he will go at some point, but it doesn’t need to be now,” McInnes had told the Scottish Sun last month.

“We’re looking forward to working with him a lot longer and you can see it clear as day that the boy is going to move on at some point. We all know that.”

He added: “Everything is relative. If we get an offer, and we’re not encouraging offers, we’re well aware of the level of clubs that are looking at him.

“We understand we might need to be prepared for that type of scenario.

“We’ll work with Scott to get the right move for him in time, but we’re not actively trying to sell him.

“A lot of clubs are good at trying to sell their players, but thankfully we’re not good at selling them.”
