Separatists use Brexit to push their agenda

-

MARGARET Phelps is at it again, repeating her risible claim that only 37% of voters voted to leave the EU (WM letters, August 3).

Ms Phelps is counting into this equation all those who failed to vote and then assuming that they do not support leaving the EU.

If we did that at general elections, we would barely ever have a government, because very few would have had a majority if you count in those who failed to vote and assume they supported the opposition!

She also claims in her letter that people did not vote to leave the single market or the customs union, an old chestnut being churned out by desperate Remainers.

Both of these are an integral part of being inside the EU. People were informed by the UK Government in its notorious Pro-Remain brochure, which cost £9m and was delivered to every home, that voting to leave the EU would take us outside the single market of 500 million people. It was one of David Cameron’s favourite mantras during the referendum campaign. So when people voted to leave they were well aware of what they were voting for.

Ms Phelps is becoming increasingly shrill in her denunciation of Brexit, accusing it of many things, including destroying the NHS and breaking up the United Kingdom. Come again? The UK Government has announced a £20bn annual boost to NHS funding, to be partially paid for by the fact we will no longer be giving the EU about £10bn a year net after we leave.

The only threat to the union comes from nationalists in Scotland and Wales, who are both using Brexit to try and force through their separatist agendas in a quite shameful way.

The fact is that people in Scotland decisively rejected independence in 2014 and only a small minority of Welsh voters have ever favoured independence for Wales.
