Exiting the EU will be ok in the long-term

-

EXITING the EU is a major transition and there will be blips along the way. Rightly, it generates much discussion.

The optimists see a bright future, the pessimists, like agoraphobics, have an inexplicable fear of the outside. The remainers claim foul against the Brexiteers, while the predictions of doom, which continue today, have proved unfounded.

The UK will gain financially initially but there will be significant costs. I believe, long-term, we will gain. The dictatorial, bureaucratic dinosaur in Brussels will lose initially and will be forced to change or risk collapse. Most of the EU countries are dead wood. The Japan and USA deals indicate this is already under way.

The EU knows the value of the UK and does not want us to leave but the relationship of ‘give us loads of money and in return we will allow you to do exactly what we tell you’ is intolerable. Quite rightly the EU is saying ‘you want to leave, you do all the work, we won’t help and we will milk you for everything we can’ – that is their job.

I believe that, at the death, fairness and reason will prevail. If WTO rules did apply, the EU would lose our net contribution, plus our additional offer. As the largest importer the UK would gain more in import duty than the EU. EU exporters will lose out to any free trade agreements we make. If firms relocate to the EU to avoid duties it is reasonable to assume EU firms will relocate to the UK for the same reason.

Yes, bureaucratic jobs in politics/ finance/law will go but, while essential they are a cost, so that is not necessarily a bad thing. The EU can pay for them.

While workers will still come to the UK, the EU will no longer be free to send criminals and people who seek to take advantage of our social state.

Exit EU, long-term good for industry, bad for hangers on. I think this country has the ability to overcome everything. Obviously I’m a blissful optimist. DM Aubrey Cadoxton, Neath
