If Cymru fach’s so bad you can go next door

OCCASIONALLY we come across something truly unbelievable. The ‘occasion’ in this case is the letter (Costly absurdity of bilingual policies, Western Mail letters, August 9) from John Davies of Bridgend in which he complains of the time, and especially the money, spent on the Welsh language – in Wales of all places!

But if bilingual signs and correspondence bother him so much then surely even he might realise that the simplest solution would be to get rid of the foreign English imposition we have to put up with.

If the cost is such a problem to Mr Davies then maybe he should spend his energy campaigning for Wales to get the compensation from London that it so justly deserves. It was various London governments and their deliberate anti-Welsh policies that diminished our language. They should pay us handsomely for the damage they caused.

And for his information the only language ever rammed down the throats of Welsh people is English!

Even I, well into the 20th century in a Llanelli primary school, got slapped at school for speaking my own language. Rhyfeddol!

People come from all over the world to live and work in Cymru (Croeso i bawb, innit?), but it is interesting that, from what we can gather in the media, some members of only one of these nations of immigrants have problems with things Welsh – yes, the English, and a few buckets full of Welsh traitors. Do they feel so inferior because they are just monoglots?

I would also like to remind Mr Davies that if life in Cymru fach is so horrible then the good news is that not too far to his east is England. Clem Thomas Llanelli
