We must be brave enough to seize future

-

AW Jones accuses me of living in a Brexit land of unicorns and fairy dust (letters, Western Mail, August 4).

He, on the other hand, obviously lives in one full of goblins, dragons and other fearsome beasts, which will devour us if we dare walk through the gates of freedom instead of cowering in the corner of our notso gilded and very expensive cage.

Mr Jones says that there is no evidence that the EU uses a tactic of calling for second and third referenda until they get the result they want. Yes, there is.

I refer him to what happened in Ireland and, I believe, Denmark, when their populations failed to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. In Ireland’s case the ‘wrong’ result came in twice so a third referendum was held when people just gave in and voted the way the EU wanted.

Jeremy Hunt is right when he warned the EU that it is failing to understand the temperament of the British people.

He said that the EU is currently operating under the delusion that if they just say ‘no’ to every proposal we put forward, we will cave in and accept whatever terms they care to offer.

Of course there are Remainers who are so desperate to stay in the EU they will pay any price and tolerate any indignity thrust upon us.

I do not believe that they are more than a vociferous but influential minority. The British people have a proud history of standing against tyranny and for freedom – whether it be against robber barons in the Middle Ages or dictators like Napoleon and Hitler.

The left wing in this country constantly belittle and put down this great country of ours – a country that bequeathed parliamentary democracy, the rule of law and great engineering like the railways to half the world.

Let’s be proud of our history and look to a future when we can trade with the rest of the world freed from the shackles of Brussels bureaucracy – looking forward to a time when our parliament will again be sovereign and where our own courts will interpret our laws.

The future is bright – we must be brave enough to seize it. Jayne Isaac Maesteg
