Flynn eyes cup run to provide a cash boost

MIKE Flynn is eyeing another money-spinning cup run as Newport County get their Carabao Cup campaign underway at Cambridge United tonight (7.45pm).

The Exiles bolstered their bank balance with a successful FA Cup adventure last season, which saw them take Tottenham Hotspur to a fourth-round replay – after a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade – before a 2-0 defeat at Wembley.

And Flynn is hoping his players can repeat the trick this season.

“Cambridge is always a difficult place to go and it will be another challenge that we’ve got to be up for,” he said.

“Without looking too far ahead, if we can get through we could get a good draw and some more money in the coffers.”

The U’s opened their season with a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale, but came from behind to beat Notts County 3-2 on Saturday thanks to Barry Corr’s last-minute winner.

Newport also bagged their first win of the season at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Crewe following their 3-0 defeat at Mansfield Town on the opening day.

The Exiles boss will make some changes, but wants his side to be more ruthless than they have been in the final third.

Mark O’Brien and Robbie Willmott are likely to miss the trip to the Abbey Stadium, while David Pipe will not travel, but Keanu Marsh-Brown could feature along with goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

“There will be a few changes because I think people need games to get them up to speed, but it won’t be to rest people or weaken the team,” he said.

“Pipey was struggling at the end [against Crewe], so he’ll probably miss Tuesday, but it’ll give someone else a chance to get up to match pace.

“Keanu has got a knee injury, but he should be OK.

“We missed some good chances again and that’s our Achilles heel at the minute – we’re not killing teams off and I’m getting a bit bored of saying it.

“I want us to be a little more ruthless in their box.

“We need to just finish those chances and then I can hopefully relax a little bit more before the final whistle.”
