Ffwrnes opens in market

-

IT started life on the street food scene but now one of Cardiff ’s most popular pizza makers has a new, permanent home.

Ffwrnes, which has been making pizza at food events in and around the Welsh capital for the last four years, has opened a stall in Cardiff Market.

It’s the company’s first permanent location, and the owners say that it was the “iconic” setting that drew them to the Victorian building in the heart of Cardiff.

The new shop can be found upstairs on the balcony in the market and there is a long bench in front of the stall for seating.

Pizzas start from £5 and include all the classics along with a vegan option.

It’ll be open Tuesdays-Saturdays, from 11am-4pm.

Prior to moving into the market stall, which will have two permanent staff, Ffwrnes was exclusively a mobile street food business with two vans with wood-fired pizza ovens and could often be found at events at the Depot.

The two owners, Ieuan Harry and Jez Phillips, quit their jobs to journey across Europe making pizza.

But their own venue has always been a target for the business.

“This was always the dream,” said Mr Harry.

He added: “The original plan was to have a pizza restaurant, but when you look at the costs involved, that’s why we started with a little van.

“We went from one van, to two.” Mr Harry, who’s originally from Trimsaran near Llanelli, said that moving from the vans into the stall, was “a different working method” than they’re used to, but that he believes he’s found the right location to do it.

“The market is one of the historic places in Cardiff, one of the iconic buildings,” he said, adding: “It’s the perfect little spot for us.

“It’s quite nice that we’ve got a little stall that fits in with the whole look and feel of the market.

“It is progressing - you’ve got Milgi, Cheese Pantry, Hard Lines, Holy Yolks.”

They’re looking at collaborating with some of their neighbours in the market, and they’re already sourcing some of their fresh produce from veg stalls downstairs.

“We’re trying to keep everything as local as we can,” Mr Harry said.
