Veiled motives in debate over burka

-

I WRITE in response to First Minister Carwyn Jones’ article on support for the burka.

His accusations that Boris Johnson and Gareth Bennett are seeking “political advantage” in attacking Muslim women who wear the burka is rather hypocritical as a Labour politician, given the antics of his leader Jeremy Corbyn over anti Semitism.

Apparently, Johnson and Bennett are being xenophobic, irresponsible and racist. Xenophobia usually refers to a person’s nationality and culture, rather than exclusively their race.

In that respect, both Boris Johnson and Gareth Bennett are not using their accusations for “political advantage” but are concerned about the Muslim culture of wearing a burka or niqab.

Why these politicians are so ridiculed beggars belief, when no less than 13 countries have banned the burka, with the majority being in the EU.

The covering of the face is very controversial and raises questions of security, social intergration and personal freedom.

Why the hierachy of the UK (and in particular politicians) support such a controversial tradition raises the question “are they doing it for political gain?” – in opposition to Carwyn Jones’ accusations!

A majority of Islamic countries, such as Turkey, Chad and Cameroon, have even banned the wearing of the burka and make the point that the wearing of such facial veils is not supported in the Quran!

With reference to support for the burka, you only have to go on Facebook to see the widespread support for the banning of such a veil. Mr M Stafford Brackla, Bridgend
