Mishan knows he made the right choice

-

DECIDING whether to go to university, never mind what you’re going to study, is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make.

And, with A-level results day upon us, thousands of teenagers and parents will be focusing on making that choice.

For Mishan Wickremasinghe, 22, the Students’ Union President at the University of South Wales (USW), the decision to attend university has proved to be a very good one.

“I’m in my fourth year and doing an MBA, and really love it here,” said Mishan.

“I started off doing business management, but wanted to change to marketing in the second year. It was an easy process, and the university really helped with that move.

“I chose marketing because it’s an awesome subject – we did a lot of content creation, PR, branding – and that’s my cup of tea.”

Like most courses at USW, the marketing degree works closely with many outside businesses on student development.

“The university likes to use a lot of live projects. It would get companies to come in and speak to the students and ask us for our solutions,” Mishan added. “It was a great introduction to the world of work, what’s expected, and how we would fit in.”

Mishan did, however, face some difficulties while he got used to student life.

“There were a few challenges when I started at USW, but I didn’t deal with them alone,” he explained.

“My assignment writing wasn’t up to scratch. I needed some support so I used the university’s library services to help me. I went to workshops and improved my writing, and learned how to reference, to get me up to scratch.” But it wasn’t all work, work, work. “During my time at USW I joined a football team consisting of myself and a few mates that I met during my course and we decided to join a tournament,” Mishan said.

“Despite losing, it was great fun and it was great time for me to network with people from around the world that come to this university.”
