Why Anna made the best choice

-

THINKING of applying through clearing and adjustment? If you would like the chance to study at a successful, vibrant and cosmopolitan university with a reputation for high-quality teaching and research, then Cardiff University could be the place! Anna, a current student, shares her experience at Cardiff after she received her place through adjustment…

Why did you choose Cardiff University?

I really liked the city and the fact that it also has that campus feel. There is a real student community feel and all university buildings are within walking distance of each other. As there are lots of parks and open spaces nearby, sometimes you forget you are in the centre of a capital city.

The course was another reason. Following research and having seen a sample lecture at open day, I believed that the course suited me. I’ve found the department friendly and their mentor programme allows you to get to know other students on your course. It allows you to ask a student in a higher year questions about the course and things that you may not feel comfortable asking a lecturer. This really made Cardiff stand out and shows that first year students are supported.

How did you find your clearing and adjustment experience? Although Cardiff was attractive to me, I didn’t choose it as my firm choice because I believed that the university was too close to my home in Penarth. However, as results day came closer I started to question my decision but assumed that I had to go to my first choice university.

I spoke to Cardiff University on results day and I received an offer, which I accepted. It is a very nerve-racking time, but the people on the phones are so helpful and guide you through the whole process.

What do you take part in at Cardiff?

I attended a number of taster sessions for different clubs but I decided to join the rowing club. Joining a sports club is great, as it improves your physical health but also the social side that goes with it allows you to get to know more people. This has been one of my highlights of this year and I met many friends in the club.

You immediately have a common interest with the people on your course and it is important to have friends to study with. I met many of my best friends in seminars but our friendship was built most when we spent time together outside of lectures. Having friends on your course is useful, as they understand when you may be stressed and they can help you through it.

What advice would you give to students considering Cardiff?

I would say think if you could feel at home there. Cardiff is a friendly university that looks after its students.
