Egerton’s film opens with just £99
HE’S about to star in one of the biggest blockbusters of this summer with the new Robin Hood movie.
But, for now, Welsh heart-throb Taron Egerton will have to settle for being one of the less-than-merry men embroiled in the biggest box office flop of recent times.
His latest film Billionaire Boys Club – which centres on a get-rich-quick scheme that ends in murder in ‘80s LA – has debuted in American cinemas to dismal results, taking just £99 on its opening night.
The film was given a selective release on the weekend, playing at 10 cinemas across the country – its total tally equating roughly to the cost of a pair of tickets being bought at each location.
In fairness to The Kingsman star though, who who grew up on Anglesey and in Aberystwyth, the failure of the film wasn’t his fault, but rather that of his co-star Kevin Spacey.
Box office poison since 2017, when he was accused of historic sexual assaults by dozens of young men on both sides of the Atlantic, Spacey’s stock has fallen through the floor in the intervening months, despite the two-time Oscar-winning actor never having been arrested or charged with any crime.
His appearance in the movie is also fleeting.
Spacey, 59, has consistently denied the accusations levelled against him.
