Potter stays quiet on Swans’ links with Spurs man

> SWANSEA City boss Graham Potter has remained tight-lipped over loan reinforcements, but revealed that he remains optimistic players will arrive before the window closes.

The Liberty side have been linked with Tottenham centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Potter admitted that American owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan are aware of the need to make additions to the threadbare squad.

Swansea currently have only two centre-backs on their books, with Mike van der Hoorn and Joe Rodon starting the past two games.

Llangyfelach product Rodon has done well since his promotion to the senior side but Potter needs bodies in that position.

It is a department Swansea are light in following the departures of Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez, Kyle Bartley and Jordi Amat this summer.

At least one central defender is needed for a gruelling 46-game season, with American international Carter-Vickers the latest name linked with a Liberty move.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United then at Ipswich Town, making 18 and 17 appearances respectively in the Championship.

On incomings, Potter said: “Yes, I am optimistic. I focus on the matches but that will keep going on until August 31.”

But on specific names, the 43-year-old played his cards close to his chest. He said: “Nothing to report, we are working all the time. I am not worried, I am focusing on the game tomorrow and we will carry on with trying to strengthen.

“There are wheels turning and we keep working to strengthen the group. We will keep working.”

Pressed on Carter-Vickers, he added: “Again I don’t want to speak about guys who are not here. This is just how I am. He is not our player.

“I would say it is fair we are looking to strengthen at centre-half. Joe and Mike have done well and been positive but clearly from a numbers perspective that is an area we can look to strengthen.

“I don’t think you should ever get carried away by short-term results. Our wins do not mean we are the finished article, we have to improve.

“If you have results you are not the worst team in the world. It’s about the short, medium and long term but they (the owners) are aware of the need.”

Carter-Vickers has failed to nail down a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham squad, with the youngster also wanted by Ipswich and teams in MLS in the States.

Other defenders linked with Swansea include Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna and Crystal Palace’s Jairo Riedewald.
