Five facts to ponder on European Union
JAYNE ISAAC, of Maesteg, writes very eloquently when criticising those arguing against Brexit.
Her arguments, however, would carry more weight if she checked the facts and accuracy of her claims. Still facts and Brexit arguments only have a passing relationship. Let’s examine the accuracy of some of the statements made.
1. The EU calls referendums. Incorrect: it is the sovereign nation state that does so according to its constitution.
2. As far as the Irish second vote was concerned, the Irish Government sought and received assurances, known as the “Irish Guarantees”. It then passed. This is generally known as democracy.
3. The Danes did not in fact reject the Lisbon Treaty as she stated. It was the Maastricht Treaty. They then negotiated four opt-outs. It was then approved. At least got the Treaty they voted for correct.
4. In the past she claimed the EU budget has not been signed off. Simply not true. They have been signed off every year since 2007, though with caveats some years. Check out the Europa website.
5. Leaving would free us from (Brussels) bureaucracy to trade with the rest of the world. Has she ever looked at WTO schedules and “country of origin” regulations, and the dispute resolution process?
The list of misconceptions and fake facts truly is endless in the world of unicorns and fairy dust.
