REACH FOR THE STARS
Kids will be begging to be sent to their room thanks to this stylish yet fun star-themed design, writes
Abrilliant way to maximise space in your child’s bedroom is to use a themed or cabin bed. Choose one with extra storage underneath, a built-in seat, or a fun tent-like canopy. If your budget won’t stretch to a purpose-built bed, consider adding to your child’s current one, with a simple DIY canopy made of MDF or an add-on bed tent, £12 to £15 from Ikea.
Create a fun forest feature wall with tree-patterned wallpaper. There are good selections on Wallpaperdirect. com and ilovewallpaper.co.uk. Or go for tree-design wall stickers, which come in a huge range of colours and designs( try Nut meg wall art stickers. co.uk or Vinylimpression.co.uk).
Keep things simple with white or pale grey walls and white woodwork.
Go for hard-wearing sanded floorboards, engineered wood or laminate flooring – it’s easy to clean and will withstand anything your child can throw at it (literally).
Keep little toes toasty with a thickpile, star-patterned rug, too.
A simple white desk will grow with your child, taking them from their first doodles through to homework and playing computer games. Invest in a height-adjustable office-style chair to go with it, to provide proper support and encourage a healthy posture.
Stick to a grey-and-white colour scheme for larger accessories, such as bedding and the rug, but brighten things up with pops of sunshine yellow and grass green on smaller details, such as lamps and cushions.
A canvas teepee makes a brilliant den, chill-out space and reading nook.
Fill it with cushions, a snuggly throw and their favourite cuddly toys, then string fairy lights around the top for a cosy glow at bedtime.
If you’re on a budget, make your own wigwam with a flat sheet and thick bamboo garden canes tied together at the top.
Storage is vital in a kids’ room, so choose a tall white bookcase (make sure it’s fixed to the wall to prevent it toppling over). Baskets are great for stashing anything from games and books to cushions, while an underbed drawer will stop toys from taking over.
