Tributes paid after death of talented teen

A HEARTBROKE­N family have been left “totally devastated” after the death of a talented teenage footballer.

Jake Pickford, from Rhymney, was just 16 when he died suddenly on Wednesday, August 15.

His family said: “We are totally devastated by the loss of our amazing son and brother Jake, who has been taken from us far too soon”.

Jake played for Aberbargoe­d Buds FC under-18s.

Mark Giffard, chairman of the club, said: “Jake had recently joined our club and looked such a promising player.

“He was an important player of the invincible Pengam under16 team last year, scoring 26 goals for the season.

“He will sadly be missed by all and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this extremely traumatic time. Rest in peace young man.”

The club’s games against Risca Utd and Treowen Stars have been postponed as “a mark of respect”.

In a post on social media, the club said: “We sadly report the devastatin­g news of youth team player Jake Pickford who died suddenly in his sleep.

“Jake was a great lad and a great player he will be greatly missed by all.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace young man.

“We would like to thank each and everyone of you for your kind comments you have really come together and shown dignity and respect for Jake and his family.

“We are all overwhelme­d and will take comfort from it, thanks again from all at the Buds.”

Ebbw Vale Town FC said : “So sorry to hear this terrible news. Thoughts go out to family and all at the club.”

New Tredegar RFC said: “Devastatin­g news all at our club are so sorry for the loss of this young man. Thoughts with friends family and team mates.”

Rhymney AFC sent their “deepest condolence­s”, as well as many other clubs from the area.
