Seafood restaurant flexes its mussels in bid to be best in UK
A SEAFOOD restaurant in Wales is in the running to be named the best in the UK.
Pysgoty is on the harbour front in Aberystwyth and serves a selection of freshly prepared fish and shellfish caught by the town’s fishermen in Cardigan Bay.
Now the café-bar has been named as one of 12 eateries in the UK battling it out to be named the 2018 Seafood Restaurant of the Year. It is the only Welsh venue on the list.
Pysgoty and its sister business, Jonah’s Fish Market, also in Aberystwyth, are run by Craig and Rhiannon Edwards, a husband-andwife team who pride themselves on selling and serving food with as much local emphasis as possible.
They are both passionate about fish, with Rhiannon a qualified chef and Craig a qualified fishmonger.
The third member of Pysgoty’s team is gifted chef Pawel Banaszynski, who has lived in Ceredigion for several years and is familiar with the area’s traditional delicacies.
They serve breakfast, lunch and evening meals, and among the highlights are roast cod loin with chorizo and laverbread risotto; monkfish medallions; Cardigan Bay lobster and roast halibut.
Launched in 2015, the competition was created by Seafish and The Caterer to find the finest restaurants in the country that not only cook and serve exceptional fish and shellfish dishes, but who are able to demonstrate their commitment to responsible sourcing and customer service.
Andy Gray, trade marketing manager for seafish, said: “The Seafood Restaurant of the Year Competition provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wide range of restaurants, pubs and cafés that are excelling in providing customers with some of the world’s freshest and tastiest seafood as part of a top-quality dining experience.”
Details of the finalists will be announced at the end of September, with the eventual winner rewarded in October.
