Tales of humanity that can’t be ignored

The Tide Whisperer, De Valance Pavilion, Tenby

TIDE Whisperer is no small undertakin­g: it takes the audience out of the theatre, through the streets of Tenby and along its beaches, immersing them in the experience­s of migrants who have set sail in search of sanctuary.

The intimacy of this National Theatre Wales production is enhanced by dividing the audience into small groups, each equipped with headsets through which the audio element of the production is delivered: the poetic monologue on the subject of departure, which plays as you walk through the streets of Tenby to the shore, makes the experience feel gutwrenchi­ngly personal, listing the items and memories left behind as you prepare to set sail.

On the beach, you meet a series of characters, each actor delivering a performanc­e women did not feel strike me as a robust that sizzles with raw, emotional way to link the experience­s recounted in energy as they recount their experience­s. the monologues to our shores; at the end, in Tenby harbour, the choir sway

From a women who fled Vietnam with and sing as all the migrants are welcomed her family, losing some of them on the in, providing a surprising­ly feelgood way, to a Welsh woman nearly deported climax which did not, for me, sit as part of the Windrush scandal, these well with the realities of the tales told are tales of humanity stripped of everything along the beach. that provides safety and security. Surely though, it is a fantasy that everyone Tenby’s beaches are a stage of breathtaki­ng in the audience wants to make beauty and this is enhanced by reality after meeting those characters, artful lighting and a compelling musical and perhaps this is the point: to inspire a score. shift that might make more happy endings

It’s impossible not to empathise – the possible, and promote more empathy stated aim of the piece is to get the audience with those who risk their lives at sea to imagine what it would be like if it because life in their home countries has happened here, in Wales; but the recurring become intolerabl­e. motif of a choir of Welsh cockle ■ Jenny White
