- » ‘THAT TERRIBLE DAY’

“THE morning it all happened will never leave me. It was horrific.

“The evening before, we had been out locally to a friend’s house for a really fun event. They had got chefs in. Eight of us had a great laugh around the swimming pool. It was the first night we allowed our boys to stay at home with their friends while Gary and I went out.

“We felt they had got to that age where they could be left. And in any case we were just up the road if there were any problems.

“The next morning back at our home turned into a horror film. I was the one who found him, the one who cut him down.

“I got Ed up and unfortunately he saw what his dad had done. I had to use his phone because mine wasn’t charged.

“I made the phone call to the emergency services. Really, I just didn’t know what to do.

“I cut him down. I was screaming at the paramedics to resuscitate him. But I knew really that he was gone. I was just screaming in hope and desperation.

“I was standing in the garage where he had hung himself, shaking.

“One of the paramedics said to me to go inside the house and call my parents. I’d become like a little child, not knowing what to do.

“I then called my mum and dad and then Gary’s mum and dad. I said it as it was and it was horrible hearing their screams of anguish on the other end of the phone.

“All four of them eventually came over, some family and friends then started arriving. It was on the news all day.

“I remember lying on the couch most of the day while people were coming and going.

“A policeman came, explained a few things and then turned to one of my friends and said I was in shock.

“I wasn’t responding to anything. In any case, no-one really knew what to say or do.”
