Khan could be next for a Cardiff stadium fight

- TOM COLEMAN Football writer tom.coleman@walesonline.co.uk

AMIR Khan looks likely to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua by choosing Cardiff’s Principality Stadium as the stage for his next big fight this December.

He looks increasingly likely to fight fellow Brit Kell Brook in what would be a huge British boxing occasion in the Welsh capital.

Kahn had been keen to face the legendary Manny Pacquiao in his next fight but he now looks set for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, after the American took to Instagram to announce he was coming out of retirement.

Pacquiao has since stated that the fight should be confirmed later this week, meaning that a showdown with Khan now looks to be dead in the water.

A fight with Brook now seems the likely alternative for Kahn, with both stars signed to promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom organisation.

That is likely to suit Brook, who’s been itching to face Khan for some time and has previously outlined his determination to come down to the 147lb welterweight limit to make it happen.

Promoter Hearn has said that a showdown with Brook is likely to be staged at the Principality Stadium, with Las Vegas believed to have been the preferred option in the event of a fight with Pacquiao.

The Cardiff fight would most likely be held on December 8, although the weekend before and after are also being considered.

The stadium has the huge advantage of being the only stadium venue in Britain with a roof, with the likes of Wembley not suitable for hosting such an event in the middle of winter.

Wales complete their autumn international rugby fixtures against South Africa on November, 24, which would allow enough time for the stadium to be transformed into a boxing arena.

“Millennium Stadium, that’s the 1st, the 8th and the 15th, Kell at Millennium Stadium,” Hearn said when asked where he plans on staging the Khan vs. Brook fight.

It remains to be seen what sort of crowd Khan v Brook would attract at the Principality Stadium, which has had huge success in hosting the last two of Joshua’s fights against Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker .

Joshua’s first fight in the Welsh capital saw around 80,000 fans in attendance.

Khan himself was taken the full 12 rounds in a wide welterweight points victory against Samuel Vargas at the Birmingham Arena earlier this month, but believes he still has several more big fights in him following a lengthy spell out of the ring.

“I am only going to get better now after a two-year lay-off. And it was good to get 12 rounds under my belt again.

“I’ve had 37 fights but i still have a love for boxing and training. I am not saying its one or two more fights and then I’m done.

“But we are businessman.

“We will take what is the best financial move.”
