Wales takes starring role in ‘terrifying’ Netflix film

- KATHRYN WILLIAMS Reporter kathryn.williams@walesonline.co.uk

APOSTLE is the new, Walesfilmed movie from Netflix and it looks absolutely terrifying. Starring Michael Sheen, Downton Abbey and Beauty and the Beast actor Dan Stevens, and Keeping Faith’s Mark Lewis Jones, Apostle has been filmed at locations around south Wales.

An entire village set was built at Margam Park and the beginning of the trailer shows a swooping view of Pontsticill Reservoir, in Merthyr Tydfil.

Sheen plays a cult preacher in the film.

The horror is set in 1905 and sees Stevens’ Thomas Richardson delve into the secrets of a cult on a remote island where he has travelled to search for his sister.

Hirwaun-born director Evans, who is well known for his cult action films, The Raid and The Raid 2, which he filmed in Indonesia, has previously said he’d like to make a film back home in Wales and it seems that Apostle is that film.

Evans, who’s been described as “The Welsh Tarantino” by Stevens in a previous interview, looks to have squeezed in some exciting fight scenes in Apostle, which has been causing much excitement among fans.

Stevens told film website Flickering Myth last month: “There is a bit of action, it’s not The Raid 3 which people kept asking me, but it’s, I hope, a pretty special work, it was a really unique experience, a tough shoot.”

■ Apostle streams on Netflix from October 12, just in time for Halloween.
