Vote should go to those aged 16 to 50

-

WHY should we citizens stop fighting to remain in the EU, as advocated by Jane Isaac (“Remainers should stop fighting lost campaign”, WM letters, September 17)?

This is a democratic country and we are all allowed to have our say.

What beggars belief is their assertion of “half truths, untruths and loony bin ravings” when the entire leave campaign was sold to this country as exactly that. It would honestly be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic.

Project Lies as carried out by the morally bankrupt leave campaigners is what has reduced this country to a shadow of itself and, horrifyingly, the worst is yet to come. However, we should all bury our heads in the sand, just like the ardent leavers and ignore the stark and real warnings coming from experts around the world as mere “loony bin ravings”.

She then gives a rather glib remark about the EU’s role in peace and security. Perhaps she should check the other European countries who established Nato. It would appear that it is the role of Brexit supporters to extol the virtues of Britain but to conveniently forget the contributions of other countries. Does she and fellow leavers want another lie-filled referendum campaign to throw European countries out of Nato as well.

As for Mr Trump, do leavers honestly think that we have any influence over this totally unhinged megalomaniac who gives not a fig for anyone but himself. Are they quite willing to eat chlorinated meats and GM vegetables without a whimper in order to assuage his over-inflated self grandeur and achieve a deal that will differ not a jot to what we already have?

Sovereignty means that we are allowed to have differing views and the fact that people are advocating a different way is part and parcel of that. It would appear leavers would prefer a dictatorship by not allowing free debate and we already make our own laws as isn’t this what their MPs and Parliament are for?

My beliefs and the way I think are based on listening and assimilating, not on some dreams of greatness as dished out by rabid right-wingers nor some loony left-wingers who see this as an opportunity to return to the days when unions ran the

country. I have the right to believe a vote should be given exclusively to citizens of Britain between the ages of 16 to 50 as it is their futures that leavers are playing with in such a thoughtless and cavalier way and it is with the young that the future direction of this country should lie.
