Ricketts: We’ll stay calm and carry on

-

WREXHAM are back in National League action this afternoon as they make the trip to Sutton United.

The Dragons currently sit second in the table with seven wins and 24 points from 11 matches and are just a point behind surprise early leaders Harrogate Town – who they then visit on Tuesday night.

Sam Ricketts’ side come into the match following last Saturday’s 4-1 Racecourse win over Ebbsfleet United – in a game where they flew out of the traps and were four up by half time.

Ricketts labelled that their best performance since he arrived at the club but, ahead of today’s visit to Gander Green Lane, maintains nobody will be getting carried away.

“The players will be grounded,” he said.

“They know we’re still in September, there’s an awful long way to go.

“It was a really good performance, some really nice bits of play and some really nice goals but you still only get three points for it unfortunately.

“It’s just about building and trying to improve again. Going away from home, playing on a 3G pitch – it’s a tough test.”

The matches at both Sutton and Harrogate will be played on artificial surfaces but Ricketts, although not a fan of them, won’t be using that as an excuse if they slip up in either match.

“The players have played on it enough over the years,” he said.

“We’ll train on it before we go down and play them, but it’s still a ball, it’s still the same formation, it’s still 11 verses 11.

“I still don’t think 3G should be allowed if I’m honest with you.

“I fully understand it but I’m probably old fashioned and I like football being played on grass.

“It does give a huge advantage to the home team because no 3G pitch is quite the same. Even if we train on 3G all week this week, it will be different to when we play on Sutton’s.

“That’s my take on it, but it doesn’t mean anything.”

Sutton, who reached the play-offs last season, are currently eighth in the table with 19 points from 11 matches – although they were thumped 4-0 at home by Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
