We can fix Montero - boss

-

GRAHAM Potter says he and Swansea City must “do better” and find the solution to Jefferson Montero’s injury problems to allow the Ecuador international to show what he can do on a regular basis.

Winger Montero (right) is currently sidelined with a thigh problem, the latest in a string of injury issues that have blighted him over recent seasons.

The latest injury blow comes after an encouraging start to the season, in which he made match-turning cameos from the bench against Sheffield United and Millwall.

But Potter refuses to accept the player is simply unlucky when it comes to his wretched injury record, and is sure there is work he and the club can do to help him overturn his woes and help him perform at his best in the longer term.

“Jefferson has a complex history and we are trying to work out the best way to be with him,” said Potter.

“He has had a setback but it is not too bad, he will come back strong and we will be better for it.

“I think we can be better, and I can be better and learn from it. Just because it has happened in the past does not mean it has to keep happening.

“I don’t want to accept that, it’s just one of those things we have to learn from and move forward again.

“He is a player for whom it is complex because of his past with injuries, the type of athlete he is and the type of footballer he is.

“He hardly ever strikes the ball during the game, and then he will strike it in a training session where it is a bit unnatural and it suddenly becomes a problem.

“So it’s about working out what he can and cannot do all the time. I have been really pleased with him and we are looking forward to helping him get back as strongly as possible.”
