St John’s College: Building for the future

-

ST John’s College, a leading independent school in Wales, is delighted to announce the opening of its new sixth-form centre, which is a realisation of its long-term vision that education should prepare students for university and the world of work in a global, 21st Century.

This new facility will provide teaching space in a modern, professional environment with:

■ Modern purpose-built classrooms.

■ A common room and studyresource area, equipped with high-speed wi-fi .

■ A lecture theatre with regular specialist speakers who will motivate, inspire and give expert careers advice.

■ One-to-one personal statement Ucas guidance.

■ An environment that is conducive to education where teachers instil a love of learning while allowing students greater independence.

■ Broad range of A-levels available including new subjects: business, government and politics and psychology, as well as EPQ (Extended Project Qualification).

■ Access to an on-site restaurant. A renowned sixth form, which is diverse and multicultural, will be able to cultivate a distinct identity while still remaining very much part of the wider school community.

Many students will be able to hold positions of responsibility such as learning leaders, prefects, house captains, head boy and head girl, acting as role models to inspire and engender a love of learning in younger pupils. As choir school to the Metropolitan Cathedral of St David in Cardiff, St John’s College has enjoyed a long-standing reputation as a school of musical excellence.

St John’s College is a newlyregistered Duke of Edinburgh Award centre and expeditions for Bronze and Silver Awards took place this summer. In addition, St John’s is also a registered LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) examination centre and many pupils have achieved outstanding examination results.

New initiatives, coupled with expanded musical provision (percussion ensemble and big bands), numerous new sporting opportunities (track cycling, table tennis and academy) and continued success in chess and public speaking, have greatly enhanced the educational experience at St John’s College.

Valuable skills and experiences, outside the curriculum, along with drama productions and field trips, are often those that enrich and stay with us throughout our lives and have such a positive impact on our development.

The new sixth-form centre at Eastern Business Park is located on Wern Fawr Lane, adjacent to Newport Road, and is just five minutes’ walk from the main school. On-site parking is available for sixth-form students through application.

Excellent standards were noted by Estyn in February 2018. “The standards achieved by pupils across the school are extremely high and throughout the school pupils are confident and articulate learners”. Estyn inspectors also observed that: “The school’s provision for care, support and guidance is of a high quality… This level of support makes an exceptional contribution to pupils’ high standards, wellbeing and attitudes to learning.” (Crown Copyright 2018).
