MAY SEES A FUTURE ‘FULL OF PROMISE’ FOR BRITAIN

PRIME Minister Theresa May will today take to the stage of the Conservati­ve party conference and call for a return of decency to political discourse, a day after coming under fierce attack within her own party.

In one of the most important speeches of her political career, the Tory leader faces the challenge of injecting confidence not just in her party but in the country as crunch Brexit talks loom.

But she will deliver her speech fully aware that a day earlier Tory activists cheered as former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson portrayed her Chequers plan for leaving the EU as a treacherou­s attempt to “cheat” the electorate which would lead to national humiliatio­n.

Mrs May will use her moment in the national spotlight to try and instil optimism, despite mounting talk of the UK leaving the EU without a deal.

“I passionate­ly believe that our best days lie ahead of us and that our future is full of promise,” she will say. “Don’t let anyone tell you we don’t have what it takes: we have everything we need to succeed.”

Speaking a week after Jeremy Corbyn delivered his own conference speech and presented himself as a Prime Minister-inwaiting, she will launch a direct attack on the Labour leader and call for a restoratio­n of decency.
