‘A bit more qualityand we’dhave wonagain’

NEWPORT

County boss Michael

Flynn says a bit more quality in the final third of the pitch would have made it another perfect away day for his side at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

County have not lost on the road in League Two since the opening day of the season but they were unable to match last month’s wins at Port Vale, Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers.

Padraig Amond equalised after a Scot Bennett own goal had put the hosts ahead at The New Lawn.

And, although Rovers hit the woodwork twice in the first half, the Exiles had the better of the chances after the break and captain Mickey Demetriou missed from the penalty spot.

“I thought we were the better team,” said Flynn.

“There wasn’t too much in it but we were the better team and I was really pleased with the way the boys played after going 1-0 down.

“We couldn’t do anything about it. It was a most unfortunate own goal. It took a bad deflection and could have gone anywhere but it’s gone in.

“And with the penalty miss as well it was a bit of a frustrating day but they played really well.

“Forest Green are unbeaten and we looked a good team,” he added.

“I’m maybe a little bit biased but I still felt we played the best stuff.

“The amount of times we got down the side of them and put crosses in [was superb].

“It was just that final touch and a bit of quality [that we were missing] and [if we had that] we would have killed the game off.

“I’m disappointed that we haven’t got the three points but, believe me, I’m over the moon with the way that the boys performed.

“I thought it was a solid performance. It was very good.”

Flynn is glad that his side now have a full week to prepare for the visit of fifth-placed Stevenage to Rodney Parade next Saturday.

“It’s good,” said the Exiles boss. “It gives Matty [Dolan] another week [to recover from a knee injury]. He trained on Friday but it would have been a little bit too early just to throw him straight back in.

“And it allowed Robbie [Willmott] to come back in. We wanted to get down the sides of them and we did it but we just didn’t kill them off.”
