Newtown aiming to extend good run

-

NEWTOWN will be looking to make it four wins on the bounce in the JD Welsh Premier League this evening when they head to Bala Town.

The Robins have been excellent form of late with last weekend’s 2-0 win over Barry Town United seeing them jump up to third in the table.

And, with the top two – leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads and champions The New Saints – not in league action this weekend, another win would see Chris Hughes’ side close the gap at the top to just two points.

Bala, meanwhile, are fifth in the division, on 14 points from nine games – two points behind tonight’s visitors Newtown while have all won all four of their home league matches so far.

The Lakesiders will also be looking to avenge their 2-0 defeat by Newtown in the reverse fixture at Latham Park back on September 1.

Nick Rushton bagged both goals that day.

Ahead of the game at Maes Tegid, Robins midfielder Alex Fletcher said: “Every game in this league is tough and Bala have some very good players and a perfect record at home.

“We know it is going to be a very tough game as they’ve done well at home this season.

“Hopefully we’ll go there and stop that run though.

“We want to be in the top half when the split comes and be playing against the best sides every week.

“It will be a challenge to get there but we’ve had a good start, a good run of performances, and we want that to continue.”

Elsewhere this evening, bottom club Llanelli Town welcome Cardiff Metropolitan University to Stebonheath Park looking to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since their promotion.

The Reds won 2-1 at Llandudno last Saturday – only their second win of the season – but are a point adrift of Carmarthen Town at the bottom.

Aberystwyth Town also entertain Caernarfon Town.

There is also one game tomorrow and is at Jenner Park where Barry Town United host Carmarthen.

Connah’s Quay are in IRN-BRU Cup third round action against Irish outfit Coleraine at the Deeside Stadium tomorrow evening, kick-off 7.30pm.

The Nomads recorded a memorable 1-0 win at Scottish side Falkirk in last the last round while another victory would see them into the last eight.

Andy Morrison’s side then host Cefn Druids in the league next Tuesday evening while TNS – already out of the IRN-BRU Cup – face Llandudno the following night.
