Our guide to Wales’ Euro league hopes ahead of big Dublin test

-

Wales aim to get their Nations League campaign back on track as they face Republic of Ireland in Dublin tonight, writes Ian Michelmore.

Ryan Giggs’ side started with a bang by beating Ireland 4-1 at Cardiff City Stadium last month before being beaten 2-0 by Denmark in Aarhus three days later.

So where exactly do they stand in the inaugural Nations League ahead of the game at the Aviva Stadium?

Here’s everything you need to know...

How the groups stands 1 Denmark Pld: 2; Pts: 4; GD: +2 2 Wales - Pld: 2; Pts: 3; GD: +1 3 Rep of Ire - Pld: 2; Pts: 1; GD: -3 How does the group work?

GIVEN that there are only three teams in Wales’ group - as is the case with each of the four pots in Leagues A and B - each position has differing rewards.

The winner of the group will gain promotion into League A for the next Nations League in 2020 after the Euros.

But crucially, the country to finish in first place will get the chance to secure a place at Euro 2020 via the play-offs.

Whoever finishes second in the table will remain in League B.

And as for the side that finishes third, they will be relegated into League C for the next Nations League.

Remaining fixtures

WE’VE reached the midway point of the group phase in pot four of League B, with the third international break of the season next month being Denmark’s opportunity to play two Nations League matches while Wales and Ireland will have just the one each. Republic of Ireland v Wales, Aviva Stadium - 7:45pm, tonight. Wales v Denmark, Cardiff City Stadium - 7:45pm, November 16. Denmark v Republic of Ireland, Ceres Park - 7:45pm, November 19.

So what do Wales now need to win the group?
