Government urged to help Green industries
A WELSH renewable energy company has urged the UK Government to ensure the budget represents an appropriate response to recent warnings on climate change.
Eco2’s chief executive Dr David Williams said the stark report recently published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that the global economy will have to undergo a green industrial revolution “unprecedented” in scale in just three decades if temperature increases are to be limited to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
And Dr Williams says that if serious steps are going to be taken towards protecting our environment for future generations, the Government must ensure that this year’s Budget marks a departure from that of last year.
The Autumn Budget of 2017 saw no further investment into less traditional sources of renewable energy, such as biomass, and onshore wind continuing to be locked out of access to subsidies.
“The Energy Minister’s swift response to the IPCC report, paired with her words about clean growth opportunities at Green GB week, offers some encouragement the UK Government is taking the threat of climate change seriously,” said Dr Williams. “The budget offers a timely opportunity to show that these promising words will actually be put into action – something which we now know is of vital importance.”
