Stitches in time backdrop for Great War centenary

-

A TOWN in west Wales has been adorned with more than 4,000 knitted poppies to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

In Haverfordwest, signposts are swathed in red and green woollen blankets, railings are bedecked with crocheted panels and coloured pompoms hang from the trees next to the town war memorial.

In the town square, metres of poppy bunting are strung between the lampposts. Knitted poppy wreaths line the walls, and traffic bollards are wrapped in black.

Even the bus shelter is decorated with garlands of poppies draped along the roof.

The knitted scenes in the Pembrokeshire town are thanks to the town’s very own “yarn bombers”. Made up of 30-40 women, aged 24 to 87, the “bombers” meet once a week to knit their wonderful creations.

Co-ordinator Sally Williams, 56, helps plan the designs according to the theme of the month. The knitting group usually put on two displays each year and have been planning the Remembrance one for around five months.

Now, with a little help from their husbands, the ladies have strung up their knitted creations just in time for Remembrance Sunday.

“It’s thanks to everyone in the group that we have this display,” said Mrs Williams.

“I just help find everyone’s niche and work out what they can do best.”

The women have been knitting for several years now, and their work is well known in the county.

Their latest work will be up for three weeks, coming down at the end of the month to make way for the Christmas lights in December.
