SPICE GIRLS TO OPEN COMEBACK TOUR WITH PRINCIPALITY STADIUM DATE

- DAVID OWENS Reporter david.owens@walesonline.co.uk

SPICE GIRLS are coming to Wales. Earlier this month the world’s biggest girl band announced a comeback stadium tour after months of speculation – but the dates didn’t include Wales, much to the frustration of their Welsh fans.

But now Scary, Sporty, Baby and Ginger have given those fans what they really, really want by confirming a show at the Principality Stadium next year.

The group will be at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27, with tickets on sale later this week.

Support will come from British singing star Jess Glynne.

The band revealed they were reuniting for the first time in a decade in a video message on their new social media account.

The initial announcement of dates included shows at stadiums in Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Bristol and London.

It marks a huge comeback for the group, who have sold more than 85 million records worldwide.

Posh Spice Victoria Beckham will not feature in the tour. It is believed that she is instead focusing on her fashion business.

However, it is also understood that the 44-year-old will still make millions from the tour as an original member of the band with a significant stake in the group’s image and music rights.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross show at the weekend, Mel C told the host: “Do you know what is actually quite funny?

“I saw Victoria recently and obviously we’ve all been in contact... she really supports us and we really support her. But she did raise the point that she was never actually asked. We just presumed.”

Geri added: “I spoke to her... before the announcement and she has said it for years that she just doesn’t want to do it any more, so we knew that.”

Emma Bunton said they did ask Victoria, and Ginger Spice said the “door is open”.

Geri added: “She just didn’t want to do it... She was busy with her fashion and she has moved on... We support her and she has been a huge part of our lives and we care about her, so it’s all good.”

When chat show host Ross asked if it was true that Ms Beckham did not enjoy the performing side of being in the band, Geri admitted: “No (she didn’t) and you don’t want to make somebody do something they don’t want to do.”

Emma added: “We realised that a while back, that she didn’t enjoy that so much.”

The group have not performed their hits such as Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life since the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.

■ Tickets go on sale on Friday at 9.30am and you can buy tickets from Ticketmaster or AXS.
