- CATHY OWEN AND WILL HAYWARD Reporters cathy.owen@walesonline.co.uk

POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a man’s body was found in Cardiff woodland.

It’s the second murder investigation launched in the city in as many days. The two deaths are not believed to be connected.

Officers were called to the St Mellons area of Cardiff at 7.13am yesterday.

South Wales Police said the body was that of a 32-year-old Cardiff man although formal identification has not been carried out.

Detectives are carrying out houseto-house inquiries and crime officers are conducting forensic examinations of the woodland after the body was found near Brookfield Drive.

The area was cordoned off and a murder investigation was launched.

An incident room has been set up at Cardiff Central Police Station and police are appealing for information.

A police spokeswoman said the man’s next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specially trained liaison officers.

Two police vans and three police cars were parked at the scene yesterday morning, with officers standing guard.

Mark Jones, 35, who lives in the Brookfield Drive area, said: “My neighbour woke us up this morning.

“About 9am, the police helicopter was out circling the field for a good 45 minutes.”

Superintendent Jo Maal, head of operations in Cardiff, said: “We appreciate having two murder investigations in such close proximity might be a concern, particularly for communities in the east of Cardiff.

“We would like to reassure the public that detectives are working hard to establish the circumstances leading to today’s incident and extra patrols by our neighbourhood teams are continuing to reassure the public.”

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Brookfield Drive area from midnight on Wednesday, November 21 to 7.13am on Thursday, November 22.

The murder is not being linked to the murder investigation into missing man Mohamed Megherbi, which was launched on Wednesday.

There has also been a large police presence in the Llanedeyrn area of the city as officers investigate Mr Megherbi’s disappearance. A forensic tent has been set up in woodland there near Pennsylvania.

Mr Megherbi was last seen in the Roath area on October 9.

Anyone who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage or any other information about the incident in St Mellons is asked to submit information via the police major incident public

reporting site.
