We need government to stand up for Wales
IN March, the Welsh Government passed the Continuity Act with the aim of enshrining in Welsh law existing EU regulations such as environmental protection, food standards, EU citizens’ rights – to safeguard these after Brexit. It also prevented the Tory government in Westminster from using its EU Withdrawal Bill as a power-grabbing exercise over devolved matters in Wales and Scotland.
On Wednesday, the Welsh Labour Government repealed the same law. Their rationale: They have “come to an agreement with ministers in Westminster” over power-grabbing so it is no longer needed. And surprise, surprise, the motion was supported by all the Conservative and Ukip AMs.
This is an appalling dereliction of responsibility by the Welsh Government. The government in Westminster is in complete disarray and cannot be trusted on anything, yet the Labour government in Wales has reached “an agreement” with them. It is not clear what the “agreement” is, but what is very clear is that Westminster will now have a right to legislate in Wales on devolved issues, and there is nothing to safeguard our EU rights.
The only party that voted against this motion was Plaid Cymru. We are in desperate need of a government that will stand up for the rights of Welsh people and Wales.
