James is here to stay, says boss Potter

-

SWANSEA City boss Graham Potter has confirmed that Daniel James is contracted to the summer of 2020 as he also delivered an update on the fitness of his squad.

There had been reports of Leeds United interest in the youngster and his deal in SA1 coming to an end next summer.

That was not the case, and Potter confirmed that in his pre-Norwich City press conference on Thursday.

He said: “That is news to me, he is contracted longer than this year.

“He shows things happen quickly, it was great to see him make his Wales debut but things can go another way but we have to be level-headed and focus on the next match, Dan was on loan and not playing last year, now he is playing for Wales.

“He has worked hard and has qualities we need to make sure we use and he can be part of creating a team where everyone pulls together and fights for each other.”

Potter was in good spirits following the news that Connor Roberts has penned fresh terms in SA1, something the manager was pleased with.

He added: “It’s really positive news and nice it is finally done so don’t have to take too many more questions about it!

“I was calm about the process, you know the player has to feel comfortable and everything is right and that takes time. But it was always going to be done, I understood where he was at and agree this is the best place for his development.”

Potter delivered a fitness update ahead of the clash with the Canaries - and it was mainly positive news, with the boss confirming earlier in the week that Bersant Celina would be OK for the weekend.

“Bersant is fine, he has trained well today and it was more precautionary last week,” he said.

“He has responded well and is available. Luciano (Narsingh) should join group next week, (Tom) Carroll has had a setback with his hip so we are looking to next week for him. Apart from that everyone is okay.

“No problems, (with Wilfried Bony). He has trained well, we are building and it is nice for him to get game-time. It was not the easiest of circumstances but it was good to get him out there and it will get better and better. He has been really good, he understands he has had a long injury. We are working positively with him and he has been professional and we just need to help him.

“(Joe Rodon) rolled his ankle at the back end of the Bolton game so he was not ready for Wales. We have looked after him, he has trained and is fine.”
