Teen patient locked up for attacking medics

-

AN intoxicated patient assaulted and threatened three members of staff who were trying to save his life, a court has heard.

Dad-of-two William Kory Mayberry kicked out, repeatedly spat at medics and grabbed one by the throat.

Swansea Magistrates’ Court heard that on November 21 last year 19-year-old Mayberry was rushed to Morriston Hospital after apparently suffering a heart attack.

Lisa Jones, prosecuting, said Mayberry tried to bite medical staff and began spitting at a student nurse before grabbing him by the throat. He then spat on a matron and grabbed her backside. He also spat at a paramedic.

When interviewed by police, Mayberry said he had drunk a litre of vodka on the day in question and could remember nothing of the events.

Mayberry, of Ozanam Court, Blaenymaes, Swansea, pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

He also admitted breaching a 16-week suspended sentence for dangerous driving on an offroad motorbike, associated motoring offences and resisting arrest.

Matt Murphy, for Mayberry, described the defendant as a man “who has his demons”.

For each of the assault charges he was sentenced to 24 weeks in detention, the sentences to run concurrently. The 16-week suspended sentence was activated to run consecutively, making an overall sentence of 40 weeks.
