Self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables
IF THE letters page is anything to go by, M Stafford (January 30) has stirred the stewpot most successfully with his assertion that we can ourselves grow the 62% of fruit and veg we currently import from the EU. He just doesn’t tell us how.
Herewith some suggestions:
■ We could more than double the land under cultivation (Hold that housing development in Sully!)
■ We could glaze the Beacons and grow tomatoes on Pen y Fan (So much for Welsh lamb)
■ We could train all our unemployed “To plough and so, To reap and mow, To be a farmer’s boy” (Good luck with that)
■ We could more than double the fruit and veg sector workforce but not without significantly more immigration (What?! More of them?!)
Is this what Brexiters mean by “taking back control”? Beware – you get what you wish for.
