Thomas facing big decision on future, says Dai

THOMAS Young has a “big decision to make” regarding his Wales future next season, according to his dad and club boss Dai Young.

The Wasps coach was in Rome to watch his son make his Six Nations debut for Wales in their 26-15 defeat of Italy - with Thomas having a late try disallowed in an impressive individual performance.

Having been ignored for some time by the Welsh management, Young’s recall to the Six Nations squad came as a pleasant surprise to many and opened the prospect of whether Young will return home in order to continue his fledgling Test career.

And Dai admitted that Thomas has a decision on his hands when his latest Wasps deal comes to an end.

“He’s contracted next season to Wasps and he’s not captured by the protocol so they can still select him next season,” Dai told CoventryLive.

“Obviously Thomas has got a big decision to make next season, if he wants to continue playing for Wales, he has to go back and play in Wales, it’s as simple as that.”

At the moment, Young is able to play for Wales until the end of his current Wasps contract – which expires at the end of the 2019/20 season.

At that point, he would have to join a Welsh region if he wanted to carry on playing for his country.

However, a big factor in whether he leaves Coventry is whether his country wants him, says Dai.

“It’s not a cut-and-dried decision for him. He loves being at Wasps in an ideal world he would want to stay at Wasps. This Six Nations and maybe the World Cup will have a big baring on it.

“If he’s involved heavily in the Six Nations and ends up going to the World Cup I think it would be a big decision for him to turn his back on that.

“If he’s not involved in any of that, it will make the decision a little bit easier to turn your back on that.”
